King of Eagles
by Dean Albanese
THE MOST REMARKABLE COIN EVER PRODUCED BY THE UNITED STATES
MINT
The 1804 Plain-4 gold Eagle is without a doubt the most remarkable
coin ever minted by the United States Mint, and is indeed the King
of Eagles.
Just four specimens of this quintessentially rare coin were ever
minted - but not in 1804 as the date on the obverse suggests. Instead,
these priceless coins were minted by the special order of President
Andrew Jackson in 1834/35 as diplomatic gifts to a king, two emperors,
and a sultan.
The story begins in 1832 when Edmund Roberts sailed on a diplomatic
mission aboard the U. S. S. Peacock to establish trade relations
with Muscat (modern day Oman), Siam (modern day Thailand), Cochin-China
(modern day Vietnam) and Japan. He succeeded with Muscat and Siam,
and returned to the United States where a complete set of new gold,
silver, and copper coins neatly arranged in a morocco case were
made as princely gifts. These sets included the 1804 silver dollar
and the much rarer 1804 Plain-4 gold Eagle.
The return trip to the far east was an adventure that has been
the subjects of books and is the sort of tale that can arouse imaginations
and inspire movies. Men may fantasize and dream about high adventure,
but King of Eagles is a true story that is more exciting than any
fantasy that can be invented. It is a story of politics, greed,
and courage that included attacks by pirates, shipwreck on a desert
island, daring rescues, strange-but-true encounters with exotic
natives, and finally tragedy.
Today, the saga is told as never before and the King of Eagles continues
to be the ultimate prize for collectors of American coins and history
enthusiasts.

The Heart of the Matter Workbook
by Rachel Kramer
Upon the completion of the book… Heart of the Matter,
it occurred to the authors that many educators would wish know about
the practical ways to bring the expressed attitudes or dispositions
toward teaching into the classroom. They wished to produce a manuscript
for a workbook guide that would elucidate the concepts treated in
Heart of the Matter and lay out activities and reflections that
address these concepts. To write and illustrate these concepts they
found a talented and experienced elementary school master teacher
in Rachel Kramer who is presently teaching undergraduate students
in the Education Department at Brandeis University.
Rachel has followed the format of the book, speaking to its guiding
concepts with a structure framed by professional experience. The
format of the workbook consists of 3 parts for each concept. First
she includes a brief discussion of the theme; then she offers classroom
activities and strategies that foster helpful attitudinal shifts;
and finally she ends each section with reflective questions around
which educators might assess their effectiveness in practicing these
concepts. The text contains many examples, templates and other resources
for using the exercises in the practice of teaching.

After the Diagnosis
by Gary McClain Ph.d
Everyday, millions of people go to their doctors where they are
given a diagnosis they either didn’t expect or dreaded. And
after they hear it, they are left with their own conflicting, and
crippling, emotions and asked to make life-changing healthcare decisions,
often under time pressure. Left unrecognized, patients are at risk
in terms of treatment outcomes, satisfaction with the chosen treatment,
ongoing compliance with diet and lifestyle adjustments, quality
of life... all of which affects virtually all professionals with
whom patients come into contact, as well as their family members.
After the Diagnosis is the first book to help
healthcare professionals – physicians, nurses, nursing assistants,
and those from other allied professions – to understand how
newly diagnosed patients are reacting emotionally and how to help
them to harness both emotional and rational strengths as they communicate
with healthcare professionals, gather information, evaluate treatment
options, make informed treatment decisions, and manage their condition.

Comprehensive Athletic Training Series
Recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as allied
health professionals, athletic trainers specialize in the prevention,
assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.
Often the first heath-care providers on the scene when injuries
occur, trainers recognize, evaluate, and assess injuries; provide
immediate, on-scene care; rehabilitate and recondition injuries;
and work to prevent injuries. Injury prevention involves educating
people of what to do, and what not to do, in order to avoid putting
themselves at risk medically.
Demand for health care will continue to grow and evolve dramatically
in upcoming years. Advances in technology, increasing emphasis on
preventive care, and an increasing number of seniors likely to need
and receive medical care, will provide athletic trainers with new
and more sophisticated opportunities for fostering healthy lifestyles
in cost-effective ways. To realize these opportunities, athletic
trainers will need to expand their services. More employers are
also expected to use these services to realize the cost savings
of providing health care in-house.
This ten-book series is designed to help students understand the
core subject matter for becoming an athletic trainer. As the profession
continues to grow and change in the next decade, including more
administrative responsibilities, adapting to new technology, and
working with larger populations, students need content that is accessible
and understandable. This series is aimed at preparing students and
job seekers for the coming challenges by breaking down topic areas
into smaller, more manageable sections.
The Comprehensive Athletic Trainers Series will
demonstrate that athletic trainers play a significant role in the
management, prevention, recognition, and rehabilitation of injured
athletes. Athletic trainers administer immediate emergency and follow-up
care. They need to develop athletic injury prevention and treatment
programs using the knowledge of biomechanics, anatomy, and pathology
that will be provided in individual books and supplements.
The ten-book series will include:
Essentials of Athletic Training: An Introduction to the Profession
Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology for the Athletic Trainer
Complete Emergency Medical Care for the Athletic Professional
Essentials of Injury Recognition and Prevention
Therapeutic Modalities and Therapeutic Exercise
Exercise Physiology and Psychology
Kinesiology, Biomechanics, and Human Nutrition
Pharmacology and Pathology
Advanced Athletic Training: Program Administration, Coaching, Communication,
and Motivation

Heart of the Matter
The Role of Attitude in Teaching by Arthur Willis
and Marcia Greenberg
“Willis and Greenberg have chosen to tackle questions that
are essential to teaching: who are my students, and how can I build
a bridge that connects me to each student so that learning can occur?”
— Lynn M. Gelzheiser, Associate Professor
Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology
University at Albany, SUNY
Heart of the Matter explores the overarching importance
of attitude in teaching. Marcia Greenberg and Arthur Willis discuss
four constituent elements that comprise human comprehension: awareness,
knowing, understanding, and personality. According to the authors,
only the last two of these elements are regularly attended in everyday
education. In this context, Willis and Greenberg address the issue
of mutual fear on the part of students and teachers in schooling
so that readers can see how the impetus of fear can lead to increased
attentiveness, or swing the other way toward exclusionary judgments.
By discussing how burnout can be obviated, with a focus on the centrality
of awareness and the cultivation of attentiveness, this book goes
beyond diagnostic categories and offers a new way of seeing students.
“You are unique just like everyone else”, is the Heart
of the Matter. The book also addresses high stakes testing in a
critical way, the often-devastating effects it has on teaching and
learning, and suggests more productive alternatives to assessment.
In this book, Marcia Greenberg and Arthur Willis strive to accurately
represent their collective educational experience in the United
States, Europe, and Russia. Willis’s career spans from 1955
to 1998 and Greenberg’s from 1980-2004. Their combined experience
encompasses a wide variety of contexts and levels of teaching from
infancy to senior citizens in both private and public practice.
